Pentecost: Babel Undone

Term 3 — Exile to Pentecost

Shavuot — already the feast of the covenant at Sinai — and what it means that the Spirit comes on that day of all days.

What we will do

Shavuot was already a feast commemorating the covenant at Sinai. The Spirit does not arrive on a random Tuesday. He arrives on the anniversary of the covenant, and that is the point.

Fire and wind. Both of which were at Sinai too.

The rest of this night is the payoff the series has been building toward since Session 7. It lands hardest if the room finds it together.

We will put the list of nations in Acts 2 beside the table of nations in Genesis 10, and let the room find it. Nobody is going to announce it.

The scattering is reversed. Everyone hears in their own tongue — and note that carefully: the languages are not removed, they are filled. The family is being gathered from exactly the peoples who were divided, ten sessions earlier, on the night we called it a wound.

Words

Before we meet

Read: Acts 2:1–13

Read the list of places slowly. Do not look anything up. Just notice that Luke bothered to write out the whole list.

Entirely optional. Come either way.

Bring what you find

Sit with this week’s passage and see what the Spirit shows you in it — a connection, a question, something that will not leave you alone, something you think the rest of us need to hear. That is not an interruption of the night. That is the night.

The subject above is the field we are working, and it is a real boundary. The Spirit who inspired these texts is the one who lights them up, and he does not compete with himself. What he gives will open this material further, not change the channel.

Send it ahead if you can, by replying to the message that brought you here. We open by hearing what the week turned up, before anybody explains anything.
