Egypt, Exodus, and a Firstborn Son

Term 2 — The Story: Eden to Exile

Exodus 4:22 — Israel is my firstborn son — is the hinge verse of the whole series.

What we will do

The plagues read as a contest with Egypt's gods rather than as arbitrary disasters. Each one lands on something Egypt worshipped.

Passover. The sea. 'You shall be my treasured possession' — segullah, a king's personal treasure, kept separate from the national holdings.

Sinai as a treaty

We will lay Exodus 20–24 beside the suzerain-vassal treaties of the period: preamble, historical prologue, stipulations, witnesses, blessings and curses.

The Ten Commandments turn out to have a recognizable shape — and it is the shape of a covenant a great king makes with a people he has already rescued. Rescue comes first. The commands come after. That order is the whole theology, and reversing it produces slaves.

Words

Before we meet

Read: Exodus 4:22–23

Two verses. God gives Israel a family title before Israel has done anything at all.

Entirely optional. Come either way.

Bring what you find

Sit with this week’s passage and see what the Spirit shows you in it — a connection, a question, something that will not leave you alone, something you think the rest of us need to hear. That is not an interruption of the night. That is the night.

The subject above is the field we are working, and it is a real boundary. The Spirit who inspired these texts is the one who lights them up, and he does not compete with himself. What he gives will open this material further, not change the channel.

Send it ahead if you can, by replying to the message that brought you here. We open by hearing what the week turned up, before anybody explains anything.
