Little Words, Big Difference

Term 1 — The Toolkit

The payoff session — and then the discipline session, which matters just as much.

What we will do

Prefixed prepositions and how much weight they carry. The untranslatable object marker et. Construct chains, and why 'holy of holies' is a Hebrew superlative rather than a poetic flourish.

Names as compressed sentences: Israel, Ishmael, Immanuel, Bethel, Peniel. And wordplay that is invisible in English — adam and adamah, ish and ishah, Jacob and the heel he grabbed.

How not to over-read

There is a great deal of enthusiastic material built on Hebrew letter-pictograms, invented etymologies, and 'what the original really says' claims that no lexicon supports. A group newly armed with a few Hebrew words is precisely the group about to meet it.

Three questions to ask of any such claim: Does a standard lexicon agree? Does the context support it? Does anything actually change if it is wrong?

Establishing this now protects everything downstream. It is also simply honest handling of Scripture, which is the habit we are after.

Words

Before we meet

Read: Genesis 2:7

Adam from adamah — the human from the humus. English cannot carry it. See whether your Bible has a footnote.

Entirely optional. Come either way.

Bring what you find

Sit with this week’s passage and see what the Spirit shows you in it — a connection, a question, something that will not leave you alone, something you think the rest of us need to hear. That is not an interruption of the night. That is the night.

The subject above is the field we are working, and it is a real boundary. The Spirit who inspired these texts is the one who lights them up, and he does not compete with himself. What he gives will open this material further, not change the channel.

Send it ahead if you can, by replying to the message that brought you here. We open by hearing what the week turned up, before anybody explains anything.
