Reading the Land

Term 1 — The Toolkit

Three worked examples. The land is not a backdrop — it is doing something in the story.

What we will do

Abraham's altars

Trace where he builds them and you find the ridge route. He is not wandering. He is walking the spine of the land he has just been promised, end to end, putting down markers.

David and Goliath

It happens in the Elah Valley because the Shephelah is the contested seam between the Philistine plain and the Israelite highland. The fight is over a doorway. Once you see the terrain, the stakes change.

The wilderness

Sinai, the Judean desert, John the Baptist, the temptation. In Scripture the wilderness is overwhelmingly a place of formation rather than punishment. That is a hard one for us; we tend to read dry seasons as failure.

The human map

Galilee, Judea, Samaria, 'the other side of the lake.' These are not just locations. They carry tone — reputation, suspicion, familiarity. By the end of the night the group starts hearing geography the way a first-century listener did.

Words

Before we meet

Read: 1 Samuel 17:1–3

Three verses of pure geography that most of us skip to get to the good part. Read them slowly and try to picture the ground.

Entirely optional. Come either way.

Bring what you find

Sit with this week’s passage and see what the Spirit shows you in it — a connection, a question, something that will not leave you alone, something you think the rest of us need to hear. That is not an interruption of the night. That is the night.

The subject above is the field we are working, and it is a real boundary. The Spirit who inspired these texts is the one who lights them up, and he does not compete with himself. What he gives will open this material further, not change the channel.

Send it ahead if you can, by replying to the message that brought you here. We open by hearing what the week turned up, before anybody explains anything.
